How to Season a New Humidor

Humidors are the best way to ensure that your premium cigars remain in the best condition possible. These devices provide your cigars with the levels of humidity and temperature that they need to maintain their flavor and composition. When you’ve first invested in one, you will need to ensure that it’s ready for use before you trust that your cigars will be well kept inside of it. With all Oliva cigars, we strongly suggest seasoning a new humidor before using it to store your cigars. Today we’re going to touch on how you can season your new humidor.

Read the Directions

Every humidor is different, and understanding what your humidor needs to function well is going to be the first step of this process. You will always want to follow the manual that came with your humidor, so if the seasoning process that we’re presenting goes against something that your user manual suggests, don’t do it.

Wipe Down the Humidor

Seasoning a humidor isn’t a very costly process, but it is one that requires some patience to finish correctly. All you really need, supply wise, is some distilled water, a sponge or cloth, and a whole lot of patience. We did say distilled water, so do your best to try and avoid any tap water for this process.

Now, the first thing that you’re going to want to do is wipe down the humidor. Grab your distilled water and soak your sponge or towel in it. Squeeze any additional water out of your sponge or towel, and wipe down the cedar wood that’s inside of the humidor. This is usually the lining inside of the humidor but could also include the trays or the lid as well. Make sure that you’re not using too much water on the wood, but that you’re using enough to dampen the cedar wood.

Leave The Sponge Inside

Now that you’ve wiped down the inside of the humidor, you’re going to want to build up the humidity. Grab a piece of cellophane or plastic wrap, put it in the humidor, and place the sponge directly on top of it. You want to make sure that the sponge is wet, but not overly saturated with moisture. Place the sponge on the cellophane in a way that it does not touch the inside of the humidor.

Fill the Device

Once you’ve placed the moist sponge inside of the humidor, start to fill your humidification device. This one piece is extremely significant to the storing of your cigars as well as the aging process. For that reason, you will want to season it before storing any cigars inside your humidor.

During this part, you’re going to want to fill the humidification piece, and again, you will want to use distilled water only. If the instructions for your device call for something other than water, do that instead. Fill the device to the amount that is mentioned in your user manual, and make sure that you do not overfill. If any moisture spills over or is left on the outside of the humidification device, wipe it down. After you’ve done this, go ahead and place the humidification device inside of your humidor.

Wait for 24 Hours

Now that this is done, all that’s left to do is close the humidor and let it sit. This is where your patience is going to come into play. You need to close the humidor and let it sit for 24 hours. After the 24 hours have passed, you will start the entire process over again, starting with wiping down the inside of the humidor with the distilled water and sponge. The only thing that will be different this time around is that you will not leave the damp sponge inside.

Check the Dampness

After the second treatment is complete, your humidor should be properly seasoned and ready for use. However, before you place any cigars inside of the humidor for storage, you are going to want to check the dampness of the humidor. This will include the cedar lining on the cedar lining on the inside as well as the tray and divider. You don’t want to place any cigars inside of your humidor if it is overly damp.

Most humidors will offer a hygrometer that is inside of the humidor and will read humidity levels so that it’s easy for you to tell when, and when not, to place cigars inside. If your hygrometer is reading any more than 72 percent, wait one more day for that amount to lower. Placing your cigars in a humidor that is overly damp is one of the easiest ways to ruin them, and that’s the last thing that we want to happen.

Try an Oliva Cigar

Now that your humidor has been seasoned properly, it’s time to fill it with some of the best cigars around. Oliva cigars are premium, hand-rolled cigars that are ideal for any and all events. Grown from Cuban seeds, our tobacco plants are planted in the Nicaragua soil where they have the chance to thrive. Aged to perfection and hand-rolled, it’s tough to compete with the bold and complex flavors that each of our cigars has to offer. Check out the places near you that Oliva cigars are available for distribution and ensure that the first cigars in your seasoned humidor are ones that you’ll look forward to enjoying.
