A Tribute to Marvin Shanken

A giant has left us. A giant in publishing, a giant in philanthropy and a giant in friendship. For over three decades Marvin was the final word on fine wines, fine spirits and fine cigars. He built, from scratch, a media empire that impacted the lives of countless people.

If you enjoy a fine handmade cigar today it is likely you do so because of the efforts of Marvin Shanken. If you are a cigar company, you exist in a landscape dreamt up and made reality by Marvin Shanken. In 1992 Marvin took an entire, fading industry and hoisted it on his shoulders. Through his publication Cigar Aficionado he elevated that age old craft to its rightful place and re-introduced this artisanal joy to millions. Much can be said about the storied history of premium handmade cigars and the families that produce them but very little of it would be heard without the global amplification provided by Marvin and his publication. We owe him much.

On a personal side, Marvin was a gem of a man. He was blunt but sincere, he was tough but fair. He cared deeply for his friends and made it known to them. I will miss our multi-hour lunches and listening to the endless stories of his life and passions. Rest in peace.
